Both «Die Mannschaft» and «Les Elephants» emerged victorious from their opening matches at this summer’s tournament. After letting up a shocking equalizer to first-time World Cup competitor Curacao, the Germans put the pedal to the metal and routed «The Blue Wave» 7-1 in Houston.

While the Ivory Coast was not as dominant as their Saturday opponents, they were able to pull out the 1-0 win over Ecuador thanks to a 90th-minute winner from Manchester United forward Amad Diallo. This was the African team’s first win at the World Cup since the 2014 edition in Brazil.

In the past, Germany and the Ivory Coast have only met once in international soccer at a 2009 friendly. The two finished at a 2-2 stalemate, so a winner has yet to be determined in their all-time history. Both teams at the 2026 World Cup have three points in Group E. If they emulate their 2009 friendly matchup and draw again, Germany will still be ahead thanks to their +6 goal differential, thanks to their battering of Curacao.
