Fraud Tactics Draw Concern

Lee said technological advances have changed the face of modern crime, with online fraud now emerging as one of the major threats facing society. He said scam syndicates are using several methods, including pretending to be government officials, bank officers, police personnel and company representatives in order to mislead victims.

He pointed out that many people have lost all their savings through deception by such schemes. According to him, the issue had become complicated with criminals constantly changing their approach to take advantage of their trusting nature.

Community Awareness Programme

He was speaking during the launch of the Sembang Santai programme arranged by the Village Development & Security Committee of Kampung Pengkalan Lutong together with the Lutong Miri Women’s Club in conjunction with the Royal Malaysia Police Miri Division. The program took place at the Kampung Pengkalan Lutong Multipurpose Hall yesterday.

The theme for the program was “Commercial Crime, Crime Prevention, Narcotics, Gambling & Traffic Safety”. It was meant to increase awareness among the people regarding current security problems and also enhance working relations between the two parties.

Public Told To Be Cautious

Lee warned members of the public against believing everything they hear from telephone calls, messages, or even links sent by strangers. People were advised not to give out their bank details, passwords, or one-time passwords to anyone since this would leave them vulnerable to being scammed.

He explained that some of the most vulnerable groups include senior citizens and retirees. They do not have much experience with issues to do with cybercrime and technological advances. Awareness programs need to be held so that these groups understand the dangers and what they should do about them.

Bigger Social Risks

Moreover, Lee stated that substance abuse and gambling are still major problems for the welfare of communities and families. Drugs could ruin the prospects of the coming generation. Also, gambling is a problem because of the fact that nowadays it is very easy to engage in gambling using the internet, which may cause one to get in deep debt.

Lee further emphasized that fighting cybercrime, drug abuse, and gambling requires the cooperation of both the public and the authorities. The reason for this, according to him, is that without such cooperation, the welfare and harmony of communities cannot be maintained.
