Cricket Victoria is understood to be selling the State’s second BBL franchise in order to focus its energy into one Melbourne-based ‘super’ team.

The news comes less than a month after bold moves by Cricket Australia to privatise the BBL were stymied by NSW and Queensland.

If confirmed as expected, it means next summer there will be just one Melbourne franchise backed by Cricket Victoria in BBL 16 — playing under a yet-to-be-revealed name with new colours.

With the sale yet to occur it remains unclear where the relocated 10th BBL franchise will be located.

South Australia has previously floated having a second BBL franchise, while other potential new homes include Manuka Oval in Canberra and Carrara on the Gold Coast.

Cricket Australia is yet to officially comment, but the Channel 7 reports suggest the deal is done with Stars and Renegades staff informed of the merger earlier today.
