Macau Gross Gaming Revenue Rises On Strong May Demand

Macau’s casino gross gaming revenue rose 6.7% year-on-year in May to just above MOP22.61 billion, or US$2.80 billion, according to data released on Monday by the city’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau. The result also marked a 13.7% increase from April, extending the market’s year-to-date gain.

Monthly And Year-To-Date Gains

The total of MOP108.38 billion for the first five months was achieved after the May reading, which marked an increase of 10.9% from the corresponding period of last year. The recent development shows that the gambling industry has been benefiting from improved holiday season performance in addition to a constant stream of visitors throughout the month.

Brokerages had earlier commented that there was strong interest among players to gamble during the Labor Day period. The period was expected to be a major contributor to the performance in May, where healthy performances from various player segments were evident.

Holiday Traffic Supports Play

Macau received 873,229 visitors during the 5-day Labour Day holiday period this year. Official data showed that between 1 May and 5 May, the city averaged nearly 174,646 visitors per day. That level of traffic appears to have helped support gaming volume across the holiday stretch.

In separate notes during May, CLSA Ltd and Seaport Research Partners said minimum bets during the holiday season were healthy. CLSA also observed a rising tendency for premium-mass segment gamblers to travel to Macau during off-peak weeks, which the brokerage said could help create a strong tail end to the holiday break.

Premium-Mass Activity In Focus

Citigroup also reported solid premium-mass bet volume in Macau at the start of the Labour Day holiday season. The bank said that the level of activity was second only to the Chinese New Year festive period in February this year.

The commentary from brokerages points to stronger-than-expected engagement in the premium-mass segment, which has become an important indicator of demand during major travel periods. With holiday arrivals and betting activity both holding up, Macau’s gaming market posted a solid May result and added to its year-to-date growth.
