Thai Police Step Up Online Gambling Crackdown As Youth Involvement Rises

Thailand’s National Police Chief has ordered a tougher crackdown on all forms of online gambling, as authorities say more than 4 million Gen Z youths have become involved in the activity in just 6 months. Police have also blocked more than 717,000 URLs over the same period as part of the ongoing enforcement effort.

Implementation Through Various Channels

According to Police Lieutenant General Trairong Phiwpan, as quoted in The Nation on 31 May 2026, “Police General Kittirat Phanphet, the National Police Chief, has instructed all concerned units to take decisive measures against online gambling by making full use of all possible means, ranging from investigation to continuous crackdowns and blocking of websites and social media channels.”

During the period between 1 October 2025 and 20 May 2026, a total of 717,425 links have been blocked on websites and social media sites, such as Facebook, Line, and TikTok. As per authorities, this operation continues.

TCSD Targets Gambling Networks

In addition to the suppression of money-laundering activities, the Technology Crime Suppression Division, headed by Police General Thana Chuwong, is going after the operators of the online gambling sites, which keep breaking the law. A total of 309 websites dedicated to gambling via online platforms will be reviewed and shut down during the period of May and June 2026 as part of a well-thought-out plan.

According to reports by police, some arrests have been made in the latest clampdown against illegal online gambling, while some arrests will be issued shortly. On the other hand, the police have been ordered to protect the youth from indulging in gambling ahead of the World Cup scheduled for June 2026.

Moreover, the crackdown against illegal online gambling betting has been stepped up as police authorities have been preparing to close down and investigate online sites and social networking websites where online football gambling was conducted. Police revealed that artificial intelligence technology was employed in detecting the crimes.

Changing Methods Of Online Gambling

Trairong said TCSD statistics and analysis show that online gambling networks have changed the way they move money, shifting from traditional mule accounts to corporate accounts, PayPal, international intermediary accounts, and cryptocurrency. Despite the pressure from enforcement, police said they remain determined to investigate and arrest offenders.  

It was also revealed that player demand had not been deterred due to the stricter crackdowns. In the early part of 2026, at least four million youths between ages 15 to 25 years have become a part of the online gambling process.

Covert Promotion Under Scrutiny

Police said online gambling operators have also adapted their marketing methods, using covert promotion through influencers, live streams, and short videos. According to the police, these messages usually tend to go out to people having economic challenges in an attempt to persuade them into taking chances in order to get wealthy quickly.

The authorities also warned that such strategies are meant to capture the targets into losing much money. The Royal Thai Police further indicated that its different units would continue to clamp down on individuals engaged in online gambling activities, especially influencers who share such gambling content.

The police urged everyone intending to indulge in such cycles to refrain from their actions and stop linking gambling content, or else they will suffer severe consequences.
