Dallas Stars fans finally get clarity on Jason Robertson’s uncertain future

Robertson’s four-year, $31 million deal, an $7.75 million AAV that was already a bargain by the time he hit his first 100-point season, expired after the 2025-26 campaign. The Stars and their franchise winger have been unable to agree on a new contract since he became extension-eligible.
With the 26-year-old now a restricted free agent and arbitration rights in his pocket, the clock on getting a deal done has officially run out of snooze buttons.
The financial math in Dallas has never been forgiving. General Manager Jim Nill has only $11.03 million in projected space to fill out his roster and winger Jason Robertson needs a new contract. So, he has no room for making errors.
Robertson just posted 45 goals and 96 points last season. Top-line players with that production routinely earn upwards of $12 million annually, a benchmark recently reinforced by Mikko Rantanen’s extension. Because Robertson’s next salary will likely exceed the team’s total available space, Dallas cannot keep him without trading away other current players.
That reality has kept trade rumors humming all offseason. However, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman dismissed those reports on his “32 Thoughts podcast,” stating that neither Robertson nor the Stars are looking for a split. While teams like the Washington Capitals have the salary cap room to target Robertson, Dallas intends to keep him in Texas.
Now, ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reports that clarity is finally coming and the outcome Stars fans were hoping for is the most likely one. «The Jason Robertson saga will finally see some clarity and all signs point to an extension in Dallas, rather than a trade,» Kaplan reported via ESPN.
Following the first-round playoff exit, Nill told The Dallas Morning News that re-signing Jason Robertson is his top priority this summer. Nill stated he wants Robertson to spend the rest of his career in Dallas. Analysts expect the new contract to land somewhere between Thomas Harley’s deal on the low end and Mikko Rantanen’s salary on the high end.
Robertson has played all six of his NHL seasons with the Stars, earning $32.6 million through 2026. Securing this long-term extension ends the trade rumors and gives Dallas one less roster issue to resolve before training camp begins.
