According to reports in the Herald Sun, Melbourne Arts Precinct chief executive Katrina Sedgwick said the decision was made due to the ‘behaviour of a small number of people at previous screenings’.

Assuming the decision stands it will be the first time Socceroos’ matches have not been broadcast at Federation Square since the Socceroo’s famous World Cup campaign of 2006.

Over 10,000 fans filled Federation Square for multiple matches during the Socceroos’ 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar—including the Round of 16 match against Argentina when several fans were hospitalised with burns while the fire brigade was called in to extinguish flares.

Police officers were also forced to use capsicum spray after some fans rushed the gates of the at-capacity venue.

More recently, barricades were torn down and dozens of flares were lit within the Federation Square precinct during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final between Australia and England.

Amidst claims of ‘nanny state’ and AFL bias, social media has been awash with criticism of the decision, with former Socceroo and respected football commentator Craig Foster calling for it to be overturned before the Socceroos’ opening group match against Türkiye on June 13.

“Ridiculous decision,” Foster posted on X.

“Every World Cup brings the nation together, hundreds of thousands of Aussies standing shoulder to shoulder, around the country, often through the night, even in the cold and rain to share in their passion for the Matildas or Socceroos.

“It’s an important time for Aussies to feel together, watch the world’s largest sporting event, share in the national spirit.

“All stakeholders should be working to overturn this absurd decision.”
