Major setback for Storm with playmaker sidelined long term

The Melbourne Storm have suffered another setback with Tyran Wishart ruled out for up to six weeks after scans confirmed he sustained a syndesmosis injury to his ankle.

Wishart suffered the injury while scoring a try in last week’s match, with weight coming down on his ankle and causing it to bend awkwardly in the act of grounding the ball.

He was unable to finish the game and was later sent for scans, which confirmed a moderate-grade syndesmosis injury.

The good news for the Storm is that Wishart will avoid surgery and will instead commence rehabilitation immediately under the club’s medical staff.

Wishart had been starting in place of injured superstar Jahrome Hughes, with the Storm hopeful he will be available for a return as early as next round.

Despite that, Wishart’s absence is a blow for Melbourne given his value as a utility option across the halves, hooker and backline, particularly during a challenging stretch of form for the club.

He has also been able to provide spark and creativity for a Storm side that has struggled to score points in recent weeks.

The Storm will now need to adjust once again as they attempt to halt their current losing run and regain momentum in the coming weeks.

Wishart is expected to begin structured rehab immediately, with the club continuing to monitor his progress before setting a clearer return date.

With coach Craig Bellamy also managing his own health concerns, it appears nothing is going the Storm’s way in 2026 so far, and things are unlikely to get any easier against a desperate Dolphins side in Round 10.
