Bangladesh Sets Nationwide Crackdown on Illegal Gambling

The Bangladeshi government has plans for a country-wide crackdown on gambling and online gambling activities, which have seen politicians stating that enforcement action would be coordinated soon after parliament ends its session on April 30. The statement has come with assurance from the home office, stating its zero-tolerance approach in dealing with the issue.

Zero Tolerance Approach

According to Salahuddin Ahmed, minister in charge of the home department, the government has taken up a stand that has been termed “zero tolerance” in order to prevent youth from destruction. It comes after Zainul Abdin Farroque, the Member of Parliament representing Noakhali-2 constituency, revealed his concerns regarding the issue of gambling.

According to Ahmed, all law-enforcing agencies would conduct joint operations to break the connection between any kind of drugs and gambling. The statements seem to imply a greater crackdown that is anticipated to target both illegal gambling and activities related to other kinds of crime simultaneously.

The announcement signals a tougher posture from the authorities as they prepare to step up action once parliament is closed. It also reflects the government’s intention to move beyond warnings and toward direct enforcement across the country.

Legal Grey Area

Most types of gambling activities are still prohibited by Bangladeshi laws based on the Public Gambling Act of 1867. This implies that online gambling has been working in a grey zone without having its legal regulation in the country.

The latest crackdown plans come despite the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025, which was passed last year. That law set out punishments of 2 years in prison and fines of up to $80,000 for those found to be operating or promoting online gambling.

Even with those penalties in place, the latest comments from politicians suggest the measures have not had the desired effect on the black market. Enforcement is now expected to be elevated as authorities look to tighten control over gambling-related activity.

Financial Links

The issue also has a financial dimension. In May 2025, Bangladesh’s Criminal Investigation Department said it had identified over 1,000 financial service agents believed to be linked to illegal gambling transactions. Their details were passed on to the Bangladesh Bank.

That development showed the scale of the problem that authorities believe they are facing. While the strategy seems targeted at illegal gambling activities, it may also include measures to disrupt funding networks used for gambling purposes.

Such a move would target underground payments for gambling. The broader aim appears to be cutting off the movement of money connected to illegal betting and related operations.

Economic Concerns

The crackdown comes at a time when Bangladesh’s economy has slowed. Recent reports show growth has fallen to between 3.7% and 4.0%, well below historical averages of 6% to 7%.

That weaker economic backdrop has added urgency to efforts by the home office to stop the flow of underground money in the country. The focus on gambling is therefore being tied not only to law and order, but also to wider financial concerns.

Regional Enforcement

The end of April also marks the start of stronger enforcement action in neighboring India. Lawmakers there have confirmed that a ban on online real money gaming, set out by the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules 2025, will begin to be enforced from May 1.

India’s Online Gaming Authority has been tasked with overseeing compliance under the framework, which was passed by parliament in August 2025. The authority will classify games under the new laws and has the power to investigate illegal gambling activity.

For Bangladesh, the timing adds another layer to the crackdown plans. With parliament closing and enforcement set to intensify, authorities are preparing to act more aggressively against illegal gambling and the financial networks tied to it.
