The incident occurred late in the first half when Cleary was brought down close to the try-line by Newcastle hooker Phoenix Crossland.
There was instant concern from opponents, teammates and Cleary himself as the Olympic stadium fell eerily silent and the Medicab was called for immediately.
Crossland was subsequently sent off by referee Gerard Sutton for a hip-drop tackle leaving the Knights to battle on with 12 men for the rest of the preliminary final.
“Extreme risk of serious injury, you’re off!” Sutton told Crossland and Knights skipper Kalyn Ponga.

“I can’t really argue with the referee,” Cooper Cronk said in commentary on Fox League as Crossland left the field.
“I thought minimum sin bin… and (Gerard Sutton) has gone the whole hog.”
Already under an injury cloud for a stress-related foot injury, the devastating injury means Cleary’s NRL season and 2026 Rugby League World Cup hopes are over.
The Panthers led the Knights 14-6 at half time in front a shocked and sombre crowd which, until Cleary’s injury incident, had witnessed a tense and pulsating match.
The winner will play the Sydney Roosters in next Sunday night’s NRL grand final at the same venue.
