Nestory Irankunda’s stunning free-kick had looked set to give the Socceroos a famous victory over the five-time world champions in Townsville on Friday.

However, Bournemouth winger Rayan’s emphatic header from a last-minute corner in second-half injury time spared Selecao blushes and ensured a draw.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side missed several earlier chances and saw an Estevao goal disallowed for a needless foul by Bruno Guimaraes, but Australia had looked good value for their lead after a spirited display in front of a packed crowd.

For Tony Popovic and his players, this will feel like a huge disappointment, but the level of performance was something to build on ahead of these teams’ second meeting next week in Brisbane.

8:08 a.m. — And that’s it! The referee blows for fulltime straight after the restart. Australia were so close to victory until Rayan ensured a draw for the visitors, although it’s unlikely to be a result or performance that does much to earn Ancelotti and his players a huge amount of praise.

8:07 a.m. — Australia are denied a famous win! A thumping header from Rayan is too powerful for Beach to keep out. Brazil’s blushes are spared right at the death.

84′ Brazil chase an equaliser

8 a.m. — Carlo Ancelotti has made several changes (which was planned), but Brazil still cannot seem to create a good opening for that equaliser.

68′ Irankunda scores a free-kick

7:42 a.m. — What a way to break the deadlock! Irankunda’s knuckleball effort from 25 yards out flies into the net and sends Townsville wild. Souza seemed to misjudge that badly, but take nothing away from the Sporting CP forward’s strike.

7:39 a.m. — Two great chances for Brazil, with Raphinha shooting wide past the right-hand post before Estevao completely skies an attempt from six yards. Brazil really should be ahead by now.

It’s goalless at the break, with that disallowed Estevao effort the closest we’ve come to a breakthrough. That was nonsensical from Guimaraes, who had helped to dispossess Souttar and had no need to grab the defender by the knee after he lost the ball.

45′ Estevao scores, but VAR intervenes

6:56 a.m. — Estevao fires Brazil into the lead with a fine low strike… but wait, there’s a VAR check! Souttar, who lost possession 25 yards from his own goal in the build-up, was grabbed around the knee by Guimaraes as he tried to recover the ball. The goal is disallowed after a Tanimoto checks the pitchside monitor.

6:54 a.m. — Australia should be ahead! A wicked corner from the right is glanced on by Harry Souttar from six yards out, but somehow, the ball evades both the far corner of the net and Alessandro Circati, who had made a late run to the far post. Souttar’s reaction says it all.

38′ Raphinha goes close

6:50 a.m. — It’s been a quiet half for Raphinha, but his first real sight of goal requires an excellent block from Herrington to deflect the shot behind. The ball rippled the outside of the net as it went wide.

Guimaraes then shoots over after a slick piece of one-touch passing from Vinicius and Endrick.

35′ Chance wasted by Vinicius

6:47 a.m. — Hugo Souza catches a corner and releases Estevao with an outstanding pass. He finds Vinicius, who plays a peculiar cross to nobody in particular, then hits a tame deflected shot after gathering the loose ball from the clearance. That was a wasted opportunity.

31′ Endrick aghast as penalty appeals waved away

6:42 a.m. — That looked like a penalty! Endrick made a good run through the heart of the Australia defence, and Lucas Herrington appeared to trip him via his trailing leg. Japanese referee Ryo Tanimoto waved play on.

26′ Estevao looks brightest for Brazil

6:37 a.m. — Estevao shoots narrowly over the bar after a good run from the right. The Chelsea man has been Brazil’s liveliest attacker so far. The Selecao are starting to build some pressure, and the Socceroos backline — along with Patrick Beach, who has dropped a couple of crosses — are looking a little bit ragged at times.

15′ Playing surface causing problems

6:26 a.m. — Bruno Guimaraes slips while attempting a long pass, which highlights the state of the turf. It’s cutting up badly and looks very worn in places. Still, it’s not stopped Australia from settling into a decent passing rhythm.

6:19 a.m. — The hosts have started well here. After a Brazil attack led to nothing, a swift break saw Nestory Irankunda drive infield from the left wing and unleash a thunderous shot that Hugo Souza had to tip over the bar. What an opener that would have been.
