Travis Hunter’s role on the Jaguars has looked a lot different in 2026.

Lauded as a two-way phenom prior to his arrival in the NFL, the 2025 No. 2 pick hasn’t seen much of the field on offense through two games this season. Renowned for his ball-hawking traits, Hunter has tilted towards becoming a primarily defensive player — multiple reports indicated that Jacksonville was planning to deploy Hunter as a full-time cornerback heading into the year.

That decision has brought mixed results so far. The Jaguars’ offense erupted in a 34-10 win over the Browns in Week 1. It was far less prolific in Week 2, amassing just 13 points en route to loss to the Broncos.

Jacksonville’s latest result has head coach Liam Coen pondering what changes he could make to the Jaguars’ setup — and whether Hunter should get some additional burn when they have the ball.

Liam Coen gives update on Travis Hunter’s offensive usage

Jacksonville’s offense looked turgid in its defeat to Denver on Sunday. Coen admitted that he’s looking for answers following the performance — one of which could be involving Hunter more in the attack.

“Any time you struggle offensively, you look at the totality of it all,” Coen said on Wednesday. “Travis is a big part of that obviously. We’re looking at continuing to find different ways to get him involved. You’re also looking at the other side of the ball. . . . We’re gonna look at giving him some more this week.”

Hunter played six snaps on offense compared to 37 snaps on defense on Sunday. He has tallied just one catch for eight yards thus far. By comparison, Hunter snagged 28 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown in seven games last year.

Coen called Hunter’s offense-defense splits «a balancing act that you’re continuously working through.» Tipped to be a full-time two-way player when he was drafted, Hunter appears to be moving towards a defense-first approach. Given his usage in his rookie year — and his premature end to the season — some might consider that a sage decision.

Jacksonville also teems with pass-catching talent, with Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers and Brian Thomas Jr. all positioned above Hunter in the Jaguars’ latest depth chart.

To his credit, Hunter said he’ll play wherever Coen asks him to.

“That’s the plan. Coaches tell me what I’ve got to do, I just follow their plan, follow their lead,” Hunter said after the game, per Pro Football Talk. “My job is to go out there and play, no matter when they put me out there. That’s what I’ve got to do.”
