For better or worse, this year’s offseason has proven to be a notable one for LeBron James. The NBA’s all-time leading scorer joined the 76ers on a cut-rate deal, teaming with Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe with the hope of bringing a title to the City of Brotherly Love for the first time since 1983.

He also drew headlines for signing a much-maligned endorsement deal with prediction market (read: gambling company) Polymarket.

There’s an old adage that all press is good press. It’s unknown whether James would agree. Nevertheless, his presence as one of sports’ biggest stars predisposes him to criticism, particularly when his performances appear to be going sour. 

Case in point: his exploits in recent practice runs. James found himself the subject of scrutiny after videos emerged of him struggling at a recent workout.

Why LeBron James is getting roasted

James was blasted for his showing in recent open runs. Sharing the floor with a series of NBA players, including Kingston Flemmings, Jaren Jackson Jr. and DeAndre Jordan, James toiled, seeing myriad shot attempts careen off the rim.

The recent video of James proved a favorite among his loudest detractors. His enthusiasts had some ammo of their own, however; video of James dancing around the floor went viral via TikTok a few days earlier.

The truth of James’ performance in that much-discussed open run session likely lies somewhere in between. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all. Nevertheless, it’s unlikely that either display will have much bearing on how he navigates his first (and potentially last) season in Philadelphia.

Still, the clips proved that James remains at the front of mind even when the NBA is on the shelf. He likely won’t be too bothered by that.
