Former NRL player Jamil Hopoate has allegedly been arrested following an incident on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Hopoate, 31, was reportedly arrested after allegedly crashing into a parked car, with reports also claiming he returned a positive roadside breath test.

The former forward’s alleged arrest comes after a troubled playing career which included stints with both the Parramatta Eels and Manly Sea Eagles before he eventually made his NRL debut with the Brisbane Broncos.

Hopoate joined Parramatta’s junior system as a teenager and made his Toyota Cup debut for the Eels in 2012, but his time at the club was cut short after Parramatta terminated his contract over behavioural issues at a rookie camp.

He subsequently returned to Manly and worked his way through the club’s lower grades before eventually earning a two-year NRL contract with Brisbane in 2019.

Hopoate made his NRL debut for the Broncos in Round 1 of the 2020 season against North Queensland and went on to play 12 games during the campaign, finishing his first-grade career without scoring a try.

His NRL career came to an end after that season, with Hopoate subsequently returning to the NSW Cup and continuing to play for Blacktown Workers before off-field issues again interrupted his career.

Hopoate was later sentenced to three years in prison over his involvement in an attempted cocaine importation and was released in 2024.

The latest alleged incident now represents another chapter in the former NRL player’s troubled post-football life, although further details surrounding the reported arrest and any potential charges are yet to emerge.
