Gyeonggi Schools Partner With KGCC to Prevent Youth Gambling

Gyeonggi Province’s Office of Education has entered into an agreement with Korea’s Gambling Control Commission, or KGCC, to strengthen youth gambling prevention in schools.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Monday at Osan Seongho Middle School. This initiative will be focused on providing support in combating gambling addiction in school children, especially since the availability of gambling-related content through mobile devices has been increasing.

The initiative will incorporate the education program for gambling prevention with other initiatives in schools. Its objective is to help safeguard the students and provide schools with a structured plan for gambling prevention.

The Gyeonggi education office and the KGCC will work together on policy coordination, student protection, educational resources, and access to prevention experts.

The KGCC operates under the Prime Minister’s office and is responsible for gambling supervision and monitoring illegal gambling activity in South Korea.

Phone-Free Strategy and RAS Activities

The agreement links gambling prevention education with a Phone-Free strategy and RAS education. RAS refers to an approach that combines reading, arts, and sports.

The activities are intended to keep students occupied through structured and screen-free programmes. By combining restrictions on smartphone use with reading, arts, and sports activities, the initiative aims to reduce the time students may spend using digital devices.

The approach is designed to do more than limit access to gambling-related content through smartphones. It is also aimed at providing students with activities that will reduce their dependence on screens.

Through smartphones, young individuals are able to access online material, which includes gambling-related information. It is through this collaboration that there will be a reduction in the amount of such exposure through prevention and activities in schools.

The Phone Free strategy and RAS education are expected to work alongside each other. Students would be encouraged to take part in organized activities instead of relying on their phones during available time.

Schools at the Center of Prevention

The goal of the agreement is to put in place a systematic policy cooperation mechanism that concentrates on youth gambling prevention and student protection.

Instead of conducting any kind of campaigns, the partnership seeks to incorporate gambling prevention into daily school activities. The key area of focus is gambling prevention within the school environment.

The Gyeonggi education office and KGCC plan to develop pilot programmes and analyze operational data. They also aim to build a model that could later be deployed nationally.

This means the initiative will not only focus on immediate activities in participating schools. The partners will also assess how the programmes operate and use the information gathered to support future prevention efforts.

The school-based approach is meant to integrate restricted use of cell phones with organized activities in order to expose students to less gambling-related content while occupying their time spent on electronic devices.

Officials Call for Practical Action

At the signing ceremony, Gyeonggi education chief An Min-seok emphasized the urgency of responding to youth gambling problems.

He said close cooperation is needed between the Office of Education, which understands the school environment, and specialized prevention and treatment institutions. This cooperation is important for responding effectively to youth gambling concerns.

An also said he hopes the agreement will not remain only a formal event. Instead, he called for the partnership to result in practical policies that can be applied in schools.

The memorandum creates a basis for the Gyeonggi Office of Education and the KGCC to coordinate their work. It also brings together education officials and gambling prevention specialists in addressing the issue through a school-based approach.
