Players have made themselves fairly clear in recent years: they want to play on real grass, rather than artificial turf.

While it can’t be assumed that every player shares the same opinion, the NFL Players Association continues to campaign for the use of real grass using the hashtag «#WorthTheCost.»

Players in favor of authentic grass over artificial turf claim grass has more «give,» allowing their feet to better grip the playing surface and reducing the risk of injuries. 

Still, a significant number of NFL stadiums use turf over grass — even ones that temporarily switched to grass during the World Cup.

Here’s a look at which stadiums use which playing surface in 2026.

How many NFL stadiums have artificial turf? 

16 teams, playing in 14 different stadiums, are playing on artificial turf in 2026. That’s half the league. Here’s the full list:

Eight of the 14 stadiums with artificial turf are indoors in some form, with the caveat that SoFi Stadium is covered but not fully indoors. The Panthers, Bengals, Patriots, Giants, Jets, Seahawks and Titans are the only teams that play fully outdoors on turf.

MetLife Stadium’s playing surface in particular has been the source of some controversy due to the numerous soft tissue injuries suffered by both Jets and Giants players over the years, as well as visiting players such as Nick Bosa.

About 36 hours after Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles at MetLife Stadium in 2023, the NFLPA ramped up its campaign for grass playing surfaces:

Of these stadiums, only Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas is fully indoors. State Farm Stadium in Arizona can be indoors, as it has a retractable roof, but the Cardinals also have a retractable field that can be moved outside of the venue.
