Australian cricket great Steve Smith has revealed he’s no guarantee to make next year’s Ashes Tour to England.

Speaking on the eve of his return to South Africa for the first Test series since the infamous ‘Sandpaper Gate’ match of 2018, the 37-year-old who now lives in New York was unsure of what 2027 holds for him at international level.

“I don’t even know if l’ll be there (the Ashes Tour) yet,” Smith told UK newspaper The Telegraph.

“I’m a series by series proposition, as l’ve been for a while, and that’s still a fair way away for me right now.”

Despite a glittering 125-Test career that began in 2010, Smith has never been part of an Ashes-winning Australian side in England.

“I’d love to win one (Ashes Series) there… but you wait and see if that comes to fruition,” he said cautiously.

Smith also revealed his hope to represent Australia in the T20 competition at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028 when he will be 39.

In the meantime, Australian begins its eagerly awaited three-Test series against South Africa at Kingsmead on 9 October in Durban where Smith will be the only surviving member of the Australian trio that was suspended for their roles in the sandpaper ball tampering incident in Cape Town.

Despite fully expecting scrutiny and abuse from local fans with long memories, Smith insists it’s ‘just another series’.

“All that happened a long time ago… they’re a good side at the moment, it should be a cracker of a series,” he said.
