Staggs puts hand up for Broncos role, but will he get it?

With premiership skipper Adam Reynolds retiring at the end of 2026, the Broncos will soon be needing a new captain.

While rep forward Pat Carrigan is believed to be the frontrunner, 27-year-old centre Kotoni Staggs has revealed to SENQ Breakfast he wouldn’t say ‘no’ if Michael Maguire came calling.

“If you asked me (about being captain) five years ago, I probably would have said ‘no’, just where I was in my career,” Staggs admitted.

“But now I’ve stepped into a leadership role … it’s something I love doing, I love leading the players out there, leading all the young boys coming through.”

“If that ever came up, that opportunity, I definitely wouldn’t turn it down,” Staggs assured.

“It’d be an honour to captain this club, a club that I grew up wanting to play for.”

As evidenced by his animated ‘this is our house’ try celebrations whenever the Broncos face the the Dolphins, there are few more passionate Broncos in the current playing squad than Staggs.

‘I just love being around this organisation’ says Staggs

A one club player Staggs is in his ninth year at Red Hill and has played 151 NRL matches for the Broncos since debuting in Round 11 of 2018 under Wayne Bennett. 

Along the way he’s scored 70 tries and also represented NSW, Tonga and Australia.

“To play 150 games for this one club, I live my dream every day still,” he said.

“I’m loving it now and feel like I’m loving it even more than I was a couple of years ago. I just love being around this organisation.” 

Staggs is contracted to Brisbane until the end of 2028 having signed an extension last season reported to be worth $2 million over three years.

The Broncos face the Wests Tigers at a sold out Campbelltown Sports Stadium in NRL Round 7 this Saturday night. Kick-off at 7:35pm (AEST).
