Biggest broadcast shake-up in NRL history could hit fans hardest

The NRL’s next broadcast deal could fundamentally reshape how rugby league is watched in Australia, with a new rights process opening the door to a fragmented future where games are split across multiple platforms for the first time.

The NRL has officially launched its tender process for the 2027 and beyond broadcast cycle, but unlike previous negotiations, networks are no longer bidding for a single bundled package of games.

Instead, broadcasters have been asked to nominate the value they place on individual time slots — including Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday fixtures — as well as separate rights categories such as free-to-air, subscription television and streaming.

The structure immediately raises the possibility that different nights of rugby league could be sold to different broadcasters or streaming services, or even individual game match-ups, marking a significant shift away from the traditional model of centralised coverage.

It also opens the door for marquee properties such as State of Origin and finals football to be separated across multiple partners, depending on how the final rights packages are structured.

The approach is designed to maximise competition between broadcasters in what is expected to be a record-breaking deal, with NRL officials previously targeting a broadcast agreement worth more than $4 billion over five years.

However, the strategy comes with clear tension between commercial growth and fan accessibility.

ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys has previously stressed that while the league is focused on maximising revenue, it does not want to price fans out of the game.

“Customers need to be able to afford the NRL, we don’t want our fans in Australia paying more to watch rugby league.” ” V’landys has previously stated.

That stance sits at the centre of the debate now emerging around the new tender model, which could potentially see rights distributed more widely across traditional broadcasters and global streaming platforms.

At present, NRL broadcast rights are shared between Nine Entertainment and Foxtel, with Fox League holding full live coverage of every game and Nine carrying free-to-air matches including marquee fixtures like State of Origin and finals content.

The introduction of additional bidders — including global streaming platforms — raises the prospect of a more fragmented viewing experience, where fans may need multiple subscriptions or services to follow every game across a season.

While that could significantly increase the value of the rights, it also reflects a broader global trend in sport, where competitions such as the NFL and Premier League have increasingly spread rights across multiple broadcasters to maximise revenue.

The risk for rugby league is that greater fragmentation could make the game harder to follow consistently, particularly for casual viewers who are accustomed to a simpler broadcast model.

The NRL’s tender structure is also seen as a deliberate attempt to drive competitive tension between bidders by allowing them to compete for specific windows and formats rather than a single package.

However, it remains unclear whether the final outcome will reflect a fully split model or a more traditional bundled arrangement with multiple partners sharing rights under defined categories.

Australia’s anti-siphoning laws, which require major sporting events to be offered to free-to-air broadcasters before pay TV, will also play a key role in shaping the final structure of the deal.

With negotiations now underway, the outcome will determine not only the financial future of the game, but potentially how every fan experiences rugby league for years to come, and possibly forever.
