Google to Allow Gambling Ads on YouTube Masthead

Google is set to expand the advertising options available to licensed gambling operators after confirming that online gambling ads will be allowed on YouTube’s Masthead placement from 21 October.

The change, announced last Wednesday, opens one of the platform’s most visible advertising spaces to eligible gambling brands that meet Google’s certification requirements.

Until now, gambling advertising on the Masthead had been limited, with sports betting already permitted under existing rules. Under the updated policy, certified online gambling operators will also be able to use the placement, provided they comply with Google’s gambling advertising requirements and all relevant legal obligations in the markets they target.

The latest update comes just weeks after Google tightened its gambling advertising certification process, shifting more responsibility onto operators and affiliates to prove they are properly licensed and keep that information up to date.

Under the changes introduced in August, advertisers must provide licence evidence for every market they target and may be required to show how their websites, brands and licensed entities are connected.

Google also expanded checks on gambling websites, requiring clearer display of licence details, age warnings, responsible gambling information and key compliance notices.

The company also turned certification into an ongoing obligation rather than a one-time approval. Advertisers must now reapply when material information changes, with account suspension a possible outcome for those that fail to update their records.

The decision to open YouTube Masthead placements to certified gambling advertisers suggests Google is pairing tighter controls with broader advertising opportunities for operators that meet its requirements.
