One way or another the defending NRL premiers will look a very different side come Round 1 in 2027.

In particular, with today’s retirement of club legend and four-time premiership winner Daniel Tupou — coupled with the already-known departures of Mark Nawaqanitawase and Daly Cherry-Evans — the Roosters backline is set for a major facelift next season.

So who starts where?

Fullback: James Tedesco

The Clive Churchill Medalist is contracted for 2027 and will be fullback and captain as long as he stays healthy, with Cody Ramsey set to play backup once again as required.

Wings: the big question

There’s no sugar-coating this one. Losing Tupou and Nawaqanitawase in the same off-season leaves a massive hole on the wings. Reuben Garrick arrives from Manly on a three-year deal and the 29-year-old can play wing or centre, so he’s one obvious fix — and he can kick goals. Tommy Talau has signed a one-year extension for 2027 while 19-year-old Rex Bassingthwaighte continues to develop. There’s also Ramsay of course, while Rugby 7’s international Dietrich Roache may also get a chance at some stage.

Whichever way Trent Robinson goes the talent cupboard is far barer than 2026 and, in all truth, the towering veteran presence of Tupou and freakish skills of Nawaqanitawase are simply irreplaceable.

Centres: Robert Toia and Billy Smith (if healthy)

Toia is signed through 2029 after a breakout season and is a lock for one centre spot. Smith is contracted for 2027 and has been injury-prone throughout his career and the Roosters will need to have a back-up plan. Yes, Garrick can shift in when required, but that creates knock-on issues out wide. Hugo Savala also played much of 2026 in the centres, so he’s another option although he will no doubt be eyeing the halves spot vacated by Daly Cherry-Evans after waiting patiently for his chances this year.

Halves: Sam Walker with Hugo Savala, Toby Rodwell or Reece Foley

Arguably the curliest and most critical selection choice for 2027. With DCE off to Super League, Sam Walker will be the club’s undisputed No. 1 playmaker next season and his health will likely be a critical barometer to the club’s premiership defence.

Who lines up beside the Maroons halfback is far more complicated. Savala has the proven playmaking pedigree having spent much of 2025 in the Roosters’ halves, but 20-year-old Rodwell and 21-year-old Foley will likely be knocking on the door despite having just four NRL appearances between them. Injuries may well force Robison’s hand as much as form. But whichever halves pairing gets the nod, there will be a significant drop in experience which may prove costly.

What does it all mean for the Roosters in 2027?

While there’s no shortage of young talent in their squad, the Roosters’ 2027 backline currently shapes as being a little light for proven performers with their depth likely to be seriously stretched in the event of injuries or suspensions.

Without reinforcements Tedesco, Walker and Toia may need to carry a disproportionate weight of responsibility assuming their bodies hold up.

Yes, Tupou’s retirement and other roster departures should free up some cap space and it would be a surprise if the club doesn’t move on another outside back in the off-season.

Question is, after missing out on Cowboys and Maroons star Murray Taulagi mid-year, who’s still available?
