The quarterback position has changed markedly over the years. Dual-threat quarterbacks have become all the rage under center, with their gifts believed to add dynamism and dimension to team’s attacks.

Plenty of signal-callers have earned plaudits for their ability to wreak havoc on opposition defenses in open field. Few have done it like Josh Allen, who has proven to be something of a wrecking ball — especially in short-yardage situations.

Allen is already the NFL’s most-prolific rushing scorer among players who have played at his position. If he gets into the end zone in Week 4, he could find himself dancing in the record books once more.

Here’s what you need to know.

Josh Allen is on pace for an NFL record that’s never been done

Allen is bearing down on another impressive mark ahead of Buffalo’s Week 4 tilt with the Patriots. The Bills standout has collected six rushing touchdowns across Buffalo’s opening three games, breaching the end zone twice with his legs in all three matchups. If he accomplishes that feat again vs. New England, he’ll become the first player in league history — regardless of position — to do so in four straight games to start the season.

Allen’s two-score showing against the Chargers put him in rarefied air among ball-carriers. He joined Jim Brown (1958), Stephen Davis (1999) and Priest Holmes (2003) as players to collect two rushing touchdowns in three straight games to start the year.

With 11 total touchdowns under his belt, Allen has swiftly emerged as the odds-on favorite to hoist the MVP trophy. There is still plenty of the season left and the Buffalo standout has had his faults — he turned the ball over in the Bills’ win over Los Angeles. Nevertheless, as long as he keeps on traipsing into the end zone — be it by arm or leg — Allen should be near the top of the pile in terms of MVP consideration.

Allen’s proficiency on the ground has been one of the signature parts of his game. While he doesn’t possess quite as much juice as famed burners like Lamar Jackson and Jayden Daniels, Allen is at his best close to the goal-line. His record on QB sneaks is quite literally unmatched — he has 85 rushing touchdowns in his career, the most for a quarterback in NFL history.  Allen should rise up the list in the years to come; he’s 15 rushing scores away from tying Marshall Faulk and Shaun Alexander for ninth on the all-time list.
