Outside of the Week 1 Super Bowl rematch, there’s no such thing as Wednesday night football in the NFL. This week, however, football fans were treated to perhaps the second-best option available: Mike Tomlin playing Minecraft.

After previously revealing his passion for the video game, Tomlin made good on his promise of unveiling his 12-year project to the world on Wednesday night. Streaming on YouTube, the former Steelers head-coach and now-NBC analyst showed off a Minecraft city with an incredible attention to detail.

NFL fans were certainly entertained by Tomlin’s unexpected streaming event. But when Steelers fans began digging into the timeline of the coach’s Minecraft obsession, an intriguing trend appeared.

Here’s a look at the hilarious splits Tomlin had as the Steelers’ head coach based on his Minecraft hobby.

Mike Tomlin’s Minecraft splits as Steelers head coach

Tomlin spent 19 years as head coach of the Steelers, a run that included a Super Bowl win, two Super Bowl appearances and plenty of playoff trips. However, considering how Tomlin said Minecraft became «therapeutic» for him away from other things going on in his life, NFL fans dove into the coach’s apparent timeline for when he started playing the game.

Tomlin said he started playing Minecraft around 12 years ago, taking it on as a way to spend time with his kids.

«Over the course of time, they got just disinterested in the game. They go on to high school and so forth and off to college. Their participation became less and less over the years. My participation probably at times increased,» Tomlin said. «At different times over the course of a 12-month calendar, I would have different levels of fixation on this.»

Based on that timeline, he picked up the video game hobby around 2014 — which, interestingly, seems to be around the time the Steelers’ playoff success under Tomlin began to decrease.

In his seven seasons as Steelers head coach prior to playing Minecraft, Tomlin led the team to both of his Super Bowl appearances, including his Lombardi Trophy. In the years after he began playing Minecraft — based on his timeline, at least — the Steelers managed just three playoff wins in 12 games.

Mike Tomlin has been pretty good broadcasting but idk I feel like his innate city planning skills and eye for community-focused architectural design are being wasted.

He could save us from the inundation of grey six-story condos with mixed use retail space on the ground level.
