Minnesota Timberwolves

Keeping teammates in line is a key feature of an NBA leader. Typically, coaches shout in the ears of the five men on the court, but some stars do the same. Coach Chris Finch and some of the Minnesota Timberwolves have not quite seen this kind of leadership in their squad. That is why Anthony Edwards plans to step into a bigger leadership role and become more vocal about schematic mistakes on the court.

Edwards unveils plan to be more vocal leader in Timberwolves system

The Timberwolves have gotten close to the NBA Finals but can never seem to get over the Western Conference Finals hump. With Anthony Edwards as the primary star, they have been in the penultimate seven-game series twice in the past six years. So, Coach Chris Finch hopes to finally get a better chance of hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy. Many of their hopes rest on Edwards’ development.

One main improvement many players in the Timberwolves system hope to see is Edwards embracing leadership. The superstar plans to be exactly that and even promised to take it a notch higher by becoming more vocal, via Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

«Speak up when I see something. I think that’s pretty simple. Anytime I see something going wrong, just speak up,» Edwards declared.

Why is Edwards turning into a more vocal leader important for the Timberwolves? It all has to do with the departures they’ve had to stomach. To land LaMelo Ball, they had to give up another Coach Finch system veteran in Naz Reid. The Timberwolves also had to see old heads in Mike Conley, Kyle Anderson, and Joe Ingles walk in free agency. The Timberwolves also traded Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets to make way for their new roster. All of this meant the Timberwolves lost a lot of veteran acumen.

This is also the reason why Coach Finch asked Edwards to become a leader. He will now be the central figure that keeps everyone in the Timberwolves in check.

«Now, it’s up to him to take the next step in leadership, and that is his voice has grown intelligently and appropriately over the last few seasons. Now, it’s got to be the combination of the voice plus the everyday presence of leading by example, leading when you’re not playing well yourself, just small things,» the Timberwolves coach declared.

Edwards is already entering his seventh year in the NBA and has reached two Western Conference Finals. He understands what it takes for the Timberwolves to manage their regular season well while also going on deep postseason runs. With no Randle or Conley, he and Ruby Gobert will be the big voices Coach Finch relies on.

The fact that Edwards already knows what type of leader he will be makes it easier to believe that the Timberwolves will be fine. Will it not take long to become a leader who keeps everyone accountable? Will his efforts be enough to win an NBA championship? Only time will tell.
