Salta Bans Betting Advertising on Municipal Spaces and Media
The city council of Salta, Argentina, has voted in favor of an ordinance introduced by councilor Darío Madile prohibiting the direct or indirect promotion of online betting platforms across municipal spaces, media outlets, and communication channels. The measure covers properties and platforms owned, managed, or operated under concession by the municipality, while excluding privately owned billboards that are not part of municipal assets.

Restrictions are applicable to advertising on public property, municipal street furniture, LED screens, digital kiosks, official websites, applications, social media accounts, and other channels used by institutions for communication. The ordinance also bans promotional campaigns and content spread via official city media.
New Rules Include Penalties and Prevention Campaigns
Moreover, Madile spoke of the issue of gambling among minors, as a study has revealed that 24% of Argentine children aged 12 to 17 have played online at least once. He said that with the rise of wagering through mobile devices, the ability to do so is becoming more accessible for minors: “When a teenager, when a minor places a bet, they really do it from a cellphone and, in many cases, in private.” He added: “What we are achieving is that the casino is going to the child.”
The ordinance would mandate that responsible parties remove or alter non-conforming advertising within 24 business days or as otherwise determined by the technical nature of the advertising medium. Violations of the rules will lead to sanctions for advertising concessionaires, marketing agencies, and gambling companies.
Municipal Government to Fund Awareness Initiatives
The ordinance also provides the municipal executive with the power to make agreements with public institutions, academic institutions, and specialized institutions for the development of prevention and awareness programs on problem gambling and the riskiness of online betting.
The responsible authority must implement campaigns aimed particularly at children, adolescents and their families. The funds collected through fines for violations will be dedicated to funding these initiatives.

ENREJA Reviews Two Bills Following Betting Growth
The provincial gaming authority, the Ente Regulador del Juego de Salta (ENREJA), is currently considering two pieces of proposed legislation aimed at bolstering regulation of digital betting sites, especially to safeguard minors, at the provincial level.
In July 2026, online gambling generated ARS16 billion, more than what was generated in 2025 (ARS8.583 billion) through both online and land-based gambling, according to ENREJA. Provincial lawmakers have expressed concern over underage wagering and illegal bookies due to the uptick at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Regulator Highlights Risks of Unauthorized Platforms
President of ENREJA, Aníbal Caro, presented to provincial senators the problems and the importance of increasing the safeguards in this sector. He said that technology can enable access to illegal gambling options to vulnerable groups.
“They have taken advantage of the opportunities provided by technology to engage in activities that are not appropriate for people of that age. Legal gambling does not allow minors to participate, while illegal gambling does,” Caro said.
As Salta continues to work towards making gambling more responsible and minimising exposure to minors, the proposals under consideration are designed to enhance the oversight of digital betting platforms and tackle concerns about minors’ access to gambling services.
