It had been a tumultuous few days for Manchester United heading into Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third-round tie against Brighton.

The Red Devils were back at Old Trafford, three days on from their sapping and controversial loss to 10-man Manchester City in the derby.

Michael Carrick’s side have just four points from their first four Premier League matches; the sense of optimism and renewal from his interim reign earlier this year fading fast.

There was at least the prospect of the next highly touted young talent from the United academy making his senior debut against Brighton, only for that potentially uplifting story to go up in smoke a little over 24 hours before kickoff.

JJ Gabriel, the 15-year-old youth-team forward, was tipped to feature in the cup tie, but a story broke on Tuesday that he and his entourage – led by his father and former footballer Joe O’Cearuill – wanted to leave the club.

It was left to a less-heralded academy graduate to restore some of the feel-good factor…. even if only for a little while.

Shea Lacey hits brilliant goal on full Man United debut

Gabriel was absent from the matchday squad and, as one of eight changes made by Carrick to his derby line-up, 19-year-old winger Shea Lacey made his maiden start for the first team.

Lacey began confidently, embarking on a dribble just past halfway before slipping a pass inside to Youri Tielemans. United’s captain for the night popped off possession and then turned to applaud the youngster.

His next link-up with Tielemans will live long in the memory.

The Belgium midfielder ignored clamour for him to shoot and drilled a pass to Lacey inside the right corner of the penalty area. The teenager cut inside Albion defender Jaouen Hadjam and thundered a left-footed strike into the net beyond Luke Steele.

Lacey celebrated by kissing the United crest on his shirt. It felt like a clear message to supporters that, unlike Gabriel, this starlet is going nowhere. Similar, in many ways, to Lacey’s social media post in the hours after the Gabriel news broke, which showed him walking past the United badge in the Old Trafford tunnel, simply with a red heart emoji.

Mason Mount quickly doubled United’s lead but Brighton responded impressively to their early woes and Charalampos Kostoulas reduced the deficit to 2-1 before halftime.

That pattern continued after the break. Pascal Gross made it 2-2, another entirely avoidable goal from United’s point of view and Maxim de Cuyper completed the turnaround by making it 3-2 in the 69th minute.

Shea Lacey career so far: Hot prospect, injuries and a red card

Lacey joined United at the age of seven and impressed as he moved through the age categories, making his Under-18 debut when he was just 15 years old.

That preceded Lacey signing a scholarship contract at Old Trafford in summer 2023. However, the diminutive attacking talent was hindered by a pair of lengthy injury lay-offs over the following year.

In the 2024-25 season, he returned to United’s U18 and U21 teams, as well as stepping up to first-team training. Under Ruben Amorim, he played on United’s post-season tour of Asia before injury struck again, denying him the chance to stake a claim heading into 2025-26.

Lacey’s first-team debut eventually came in December 2025 off the bench against Aston Villa, becoming the 256th academy player to represent United. He appeared again as a replacement in the Premier League in a 2-2 draw at Burnley, two days after Amorim was sacked.

An action-packed cameo as United strived to avert a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton last season ended with Lacey being the unfortunate recipient of two yellow cards. He responded to that setback with six goals in three Premier League 2 appearances before a calf complaint persuaded United to take a softly-softly approach.

He came off the bench against familiar foes Brighton at the end of last season and, following further appearances against Hull City and Sabah this term, Carrick handed Lacey a start and was richly rewarded.

Is Shea Lacey from Liverpool?

Yes. Lacey is not a local Manchester lad, as you might assume, and comes from a family of Liverpool supporters – traditionally United’s sworn enemies.

Lacey’s older brother Paddy even played at Liverpool’s academy before playing professionally for Accrington Stanley. 

Shea’s badge-kissing, along with his wholehearted, skilful and committed performances show there is no question of divided loyalties.
