Myanmar Authorities Arrest 7 Suspects in Online Gambling Case

Authorities have arrested 7 people accused of involvement in online gambling activities in Yangon and Mandalay Regions, according to an official report.

The arrests were carried out as part of efforts to curb illegal online gambling. Authorities said these activities have caused financial losses and negatively affected the social and economic well-being of some members of the public.

The suspects included 2 men and 5 women. Cases have been opened against them, and legal action is being taken.

Authorities said online gambling operators had created different levels of agents to recruit players and expand their networks. The operation involved the apprehension of high-level agents who were thought to be linked to the management of such ventures.

Senior agents were selected for arrest because of the belief that they were playing a major part in managing online gambling rings, recruiting players, and expanding such ventures.

Ibet 789 Agent Arrested at Airport

On September 2, authorities arrested Senior Agent Phyo Theingi of Ibet 789 at Yangon International Airport.

Officials seized 2 mobile phones during the arrest. Authorities did not provide further details regarding the alleged role of the suspect within the Ibet 789 operation.

Senior Agent Hnin Wut Yi Kyaw and 2 other suspects were taken into custody at the same time from a residence in Ward 5, PyinOoLwin, Mandalay Region.

In the process of the operation at the residence, 8 mobile phones, 1 laptop, 1 tablet, and 1 vehicle were confiscated. The equipment and vehicle were alleged to have been used in connection with online gambling activities.

The September 2 arrests formed a major part of the wider operation, with 4 of the 7 suspects taken into custody on that day.

More Suspects Detained on September 4

Authorities carried out further arrests on September 4 in the Yangon Region.

Senior Agent Kyaw Soe Lin was arrested at the Mandarin Hotel in Hlinethaya Township. Authorities seized 2 mobile phones and 2 vehicles during the operation.

Senior Agent Yin Yin Nu was also arrested on September 4. The suspect was detained at a house in Anawma-1 Ward, Thakayta Township.

A total of 1 mobile phone was confiscated at the scene. This arrest led to a total of 7 people being held in custody in this operation.

The arrests were reported to be carried out in both the Yangon and Mandalay regions. Authorities said the investigation is focused on online gambling agents and the networks they are believed to have established.

Devices and Vehicles Seized

Overall, 13 cell phones, 1 computer, 1 tablet, and 3 vehicles were confiscated that were reportedly being used in online gambling activities.

The items were confiscated as a result of arrests at Yangon International Airport, the house at PyinOoLwin, the Mandarin Hotel in Hlinethaya Township, and the house in Thakayta Township.

Authorities have not released details about the information found on the devices or whether the equipment will be examined as part of the ongoing cases.

However, the items were identified as materials allegedly used in the suspected online gambling activities. The number of devices seized reflects the use of electronic tools in the operation of gambling agent networks.
