Sam Walker’s player agent Steve Gillis has rejected claims from the Sydney Roosters surrounding the stalled contract negotiations involving their star halfback.

Speaking on the Chiming In podcast, the veteran manager declared that contrary to the narrative in the media, Walker has not rejected a reported multi-million-dollar contract offer from the Roosters while also denying his management was the source of leaked details after negotiations went on hold last month.

“We met with the Roosters in Sydney and Sam expressed to the club that he just wanted to put everything on hold until after the footy had finished this season,” Gillis said.

“Unfortunately, Sammy was then injured a few weeks ago and is currently working extremely hard to get back…but nothing formal has happened.”

‘I don’t know why that comment from Trent came out’

Asked directly if his camp had leaked the news of the stalled contract conversations which was heavily implied at the time by Roosters boss Trent Robinson, Gillis couldn’t have been clearer.

“No, it’s not the case, if I’d wanted to leak the story I would have had a photographer there that day when we marched in and out of the building,” he joked.

“I don’t know why that comment from Trent came out, it wasn’t the world’s biggest secret and the media were constantly asking ‘what’s the latest?’

“I actually mentioned to the club at the meeting, ‘would you like me to think about putting out a statement saying that Sam and the club have agreed to park things?’ because things get out.”

Despite Robinson’s comments in the media, Gillis insisted the pair shared a good relationship and that the incident would not impact the next round of Walker’s contract talks.

“I’ve known Trent Robinson for 40 years, I used to manage ‘Robbo’ when he played at the Roosters and Parramatta,” he said.

“I think Trent was probably just sticking up for the club, but I really don’t know why he chose to do that, but it’s water off a duck’s back, it doesn’t change anything.”

The Roosters are reported to have put a four-year $5 million extension on the table for Walker.

Unless they can close the deal in the coming weeks the 24-year-old will hit the open market on November 1 when he is expected to be a big-money target for the PNG Chiefs.
