Now, he has played a pivotal role in Hull City’s stunning start to the season and is edging closer to a first Premier League start.

The 18-year-old has made three appearances for the Tigers so far — two Premier League sub appearances and one EFL Cup start — in an flying start to his career at the English club.

It’s pretty clear Herrington is rated by Hull coach Sergej Jankovic, who has played him in every match despite him only arriving at the club less than a week before the start of the season.

With Hull leading 2-0 against Manchester United on the opening weekend of the campaign, Jankovic used Herrington for 26 minutes to help stop the Red Devils from getting back in the game, with the team keeping a clean sheet.

Three days later, Herrington got his first start in Hull’s penalty shootout win against Stoke in the EFL Cup, playing 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw.

Last weekend, with Hull leading 1-0 on the road against Coventry, Jankovic again brought on Herrington to close out the match, with the Australian playing 31 minutes in another clean sheet.

It appears like it is only a matter of time before Herrington starts in the Premier League, with Sunday morning’s home match against Aston Villa looking to be a real chance.

“He’s a great investment for our club, always when possible he will be on the pitch, and I’m trying to push him even more,” Jankovic said in an interview with Stan Sport.

“It’s not easy, he had a debut against Man United, it’s not easy to be in the best league in the world, and you are playing against excellent players, but he played so calm, it was like he has 100 games in the Premier League.

“He’s a great person, he’s a leader. It doesn’t matter that he’s 18, since day one he’s talking to the players all the time, trying to help them on the pitch.

“You watch the player, you see the player and his football style, his pros and cons but (Herrington) and his personality, character, for me is much more important than his football style because his attitude on the pitch and his passion (impresses me). I like these style of players.”

You can watch Herrington in action for Hull City against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday morning 2:30am (AEST) live on Stan Sport.
