But according to Brisbane winger Josiah Karapani — who was embroiled in several off-field incidents during 2026 that saw him temporarily stood down by the club mid-season — the players may not have too much time to lick their wounds and reset for 2027.

‘Knowing our coach, probably not’ says Karapani

Speaking with ABC Radio at full-time Karapani, who had just scored the third try double of his NRL career, was asked about his plans for the coming off-season.

“Do you guys get a decent chunk of time off now?” asked ABC Radio’s Ruan Sims.

“Ah… knowing our coach, probably not,” Karapani quipped in a sound bite that’s sure to get plenty of mentions over the coming off-season.

While said in jest, the 24-year-old’s response is only likely to add further fuel to criticism that continues to swirl around the impact of Maguire’s old school training methods and suggestions of rifts with some of his players.

Following Karapani’s post-match interview there was also some light-hearted advice for one of his Broncos teammates from ABC radio caller Andrew Moore.

“Look, just a tip to Reece Walsh… if that quote ends up on Instagram, don’t like it Reece,” Moore said, in reference to the recent dramas that saw Walsh in hot water after liking an Instagram post that criticised coach Michael Maguire.
