Australia’s top ranked player Alex De Minaur is currently leading his postponed first round match at the US Open against Italy’s Andrea Guerrieri 6-2 4-2, however play has been suspended due to rain.

It’s the latest setback for de Minaur in a frustrating opening week in New York that has seen his first round match rescheduled, postponed and then moved to humble Court 11. 

More concerningly it means to win this year’s tournament de Minaur would need to win seven best-of-five-set matches in just 11 days, compared with several opponents who have already completed their second round matches including fellow top ten seeds Daniil Medvedev and Ben Shelton.

In better news Australian countryman Alexi Popyrin has advanced to the second round after defeating Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov overnight.

Popyrin dropped the first set before winning in four, 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-4.

A former world No.3 and US Open semi finalist, 35-year-old Dimitrov was forced to come though the qualifiers.

Popyrin now meets Chilean world No.29 Alejandro Tabilo and, if successful, will almost certainly clash with top seed Alexander Zverev in the third round.

Fellow Aussies Tristan Schoolkate and Dane Sweeny have also progressed to the second round of the men’s draw in a heavily rain-disrupted first week at Flushing Meadows. 

Schoolkate defeated America’s Nishesh Basavareddy 7-6 (4) 3-6 6-3 6-4 to book a match-up with Italian Flavio Cobolli, while Sweeny saw off France’s Corentin Moutet who was forced to retire in the third set with Sweeny leading 7-6 (4) 6-4 3-0.

Sweeny now faces world no.14 Lorenzo Musetti in a tough second round match-up.

In the women’s singles draw Maya Joint and Kimberly Birrell are the last remaining Aussies.
