Macau August Casino Revenue Reaches US$2.7 Billion Despite Annual Decline

Gross gaming revenue from casinos in Macau was down by 1.2% from the year before at MOP21.89 billion ($2.71 billion) for August, as reported by Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.

The drop in GGR for the month did not stop Macau from reaching MOP169.05 billion worth of aggregate casino GGR. The number was 3.7% more than the previous year.

Monthly Revenue Improves From July

GGR in August grew by 8.1% on the previous month, which brought in MOP20.26 billion. The most recent monthly figure was an improvement over the previous month’s but still lagged behind August’s GGR in the previous year.

The figures show a mixed movement in Macau’s casino market. Revenue improved on a monthly basis, while the year-on-year comparison remained negative. For the first 8 months of 2026, however, aggregate GGR continued to stand above the level recorded in the same period of 2025.

The August data was released by the gaming regulator on Tuesday. It covered casino GGR for the month and the accumulated total for the year to date.

World Cup Effect Questioned

It has been suggested by some analysts of investment that the FIFA World Cup 2026 might have caused some gamblers to postpone their visits to Macau. The football event took place in North America between June 11 and July 19.

According to a mid-August note by Seaport Research Partners, it was believed by Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd that there was no pent-up demand for customers who had missed out on Macau due to the World Cup.

The Seaport comments were based on statements from casino executives during the 2026 Seaport Annual Summer Conference. They offered a different view from the expectation that some customers would return to Macau after the tournament ended.

Premium Mass Spending Remains Strong

Bank Citigroup said its August survey of high-stakes table play found that Macau premium mass players were spending more, despite a slightly lower year-on-year headcount of top players, often referred to as whales.

Citi’s survey encountered 31 whales. Their average wage was HKD244,000 per hand, which was 54% higher than the average recorded in August 2025.

The survey figures point to higher spending among the high-stakes players observed by Citi, even as the number of such players was slightly lower compared with the prior-year period. The data formed part of the bank’s assessment of premium mass table play in Macau during August.

Market Tracks Annual Growth

Macau’s year-to-date casino GGR remained 3.7% above the prior-year level after the August results. The increase reflects the combined performance of the market during the first 8 months of 2026, rather than the outcome of August alone.

August’s 1.2% annual decline came alongside an 8.1% monthly increase from July. The combination of those figures leaves the market with higher accumulated revenue but a weaker August comparison against the same month last year.

The latest data also arrives alongside differing assessments of customer behaviour. Seaport cited Melco’s view that there was no clear pent-up demand linked to the World Cup, while Citi observed higher average wagers among the premium mass players included in its survey.

August Results Released By Regulator

The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau’s figures place Macau’s August casino GGR at just over MOP21.89 billion and the year-to-date total at MOP169.05 billion. The data showed a monthly recovery from July but a year-on-year decline for August.

Macau’s casino market will continue to be measured against both monthly and prior-year results as the 2026 total develops.
