Europe’s elite soccer teams now know the task that awaits them in this season’s Champions League after the 2026/27 league-phase draw in Monaco.

Paris Saint-Germain retained their title last season, defeating Arsenal on penalties after a tense final in Budapest.

Luis Enrique’s side are aiming to join a select group of teams who have won three in a row in Europe’s main competition. Ajax and Bayern Munich each managed it in the 1970s, while Real Madrid have achieved the feat twice.

Bayern and Madrid will hope to be firmly in contention once more, while Arsenal lead the list of Premier League hopefuls, having lost to PSG at the semifinal and final stages in the past two seasons.

It will be 12 years since Barcelona’s most recent Champions League success once this season’s side rolls around, and La Liga’s champions have been busy in the transfer market to ensure they are able to compete across all fronts.

1:18 p.m. — And that’s that! The draw is concluded. The full fixture list will be confirmed either Friday or Saturday this week.

1:06 p.m. — And we finish with Pot 4. All remaining fixtures will be added above.

12:56 p.m. — Onto Pot 3. Shakhtar Donetsk will face Real Madrid, Sporting CP, Fenerbahce and AEK Athens at their temporary home of Stamford Bridge.

12:51 p.m. — Man United draw Bayern, Atleti, Roma, Sporting CP, Leipzig, Villarreal, Sabah and Como.

12:48 p.m. — Dortmund, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce join PSG and Barca as Villa‘s opponents. Oh, boy, that’s a tough draw.

12:45 p.m. — Okay, it’s Pot 2 time. Man United, Aston Villa, Roma and Borussia Dortmund are among the teams here.

12:40 p.m. — Liverpool get a pretty kind draw, while Arsenal must face Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Bayern conclude the Pot 1 teams — they will go to Old Trafford to face Man United as part of their campaign.

12:37 p.m. — Atletico Madrid must play both Liverpool and Manchester United, plus two Norwegian teams in Bodo/Glimt and Viking.

12:35 p.m. — Manchester City will face Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona! And Barca must also face PSG! What a trio of meetings that is.

12:31 p.m. — Real Madrid are out first. They will face Inter Milan at home and Arsenal away as their Pot 1 teams. They will also face Jose Mourinho’s old club Roma, and Shakhtar Donetsk at Stamford Bridge, where they are playing their designated home games.

12:26 p.m. — Okay, we’re moments away from the draw now. As a reminder, once a team is drawn, their opponents are selected at random by a computer.

12:16 p.m. — Thierry Henry is the recipient of the UEFA president’s award for this year. The former Arsenal striker is telling his old club to use the pain of last season’s final heartbreak as motivation for this coming campaign.

12:07 p.m. — The ceremony is underway. After a glitzy opening live performance of the Champions League theme, we start with a special award, being presented to the absent Marquinhos, for the sportsmanship he showed in last season’s final when he immediately consoled compatriot Gabriel after his shootout miss.

11:52 a.m. — And in case you’d forgotten how this whole league works:

• Teams that finish 1-8th qualify automatically for the knockout phase
• Teams placed 9th to 24th will contest two-legged knockout playoffs, from which eight winning teams go through
• Teams that end the league phase 25th or lower are eliminated, and they do not drop into the Europa League.

11:40 a.m. — As a reminder, there are a few stipulations to how this draw will work beyond the different pots. For example, this will be the first time the new format throws up the possibility of potential games being barred due to previous seasons: per UEFA rules, the same fixture cannot be played in three straight Champions League league phases. It’s why, for example, Liverpool cannot face Real Madrid at Anfield.

In a few hours, we’ll find out how Luis Enrique’s side and the other main contenders can start to plot their path towards the final in Madrid.

When is the Champions League match schedule announced?

Although the games themselves were confirmed at the draw, we do not yet know the precise order in which they will be played.

UEFA will confirm the schedule for all eight matchdays of the league phase over the next 1-2 days, once logistical concerns have been worked out.

How does the Champions League draw work?

The draw will begin with the eight highest-ranked teams, who are each seeded in Pot 1 based on their UEFA club coefficients.

Each Pot 1 team will be drawn against two opponents apiece from Pots 2, 3 and 4. The draw then proceeds to the next pots, filling out all remaining fixtures.

Teams qualified for the Champions League 2026-27

A total of 36 teams will compete in the league phase of the Champions League in 2026-27.

Of those, 29 qualified directly through performances last season, while the remaining seven slots were settled via this week’s playoff round.

The top four teams in each of the four highest-ranked leagues across UEFA (England, Italy, Spain and Germany) gained direct access to the league phase. Three teams qualify directly from France’s Ligue 1, ranked fifth, with two from the sixth-ranked Dutch Eredivisie. One team went straight into the league phase from Portugal, Belgium, Czechia and Turkey, whose leagues were ranked seventh to 10th.

Additionally, two places were earned via overall league performance in the previous season’s UEFA competition structure, known as European Performance Spots (EPS). For the 2026/27 season, England and Spain secured the additional places, with Germany just missing out.

The 2027 Champions League final will be staged at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. The home of Atletico Madrid staged the showpiece in 2019, when Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0.
