Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire says the situation that saw star fullback Reece Walsh like a social media post critical of the club’s handling of Adam Reynolds’ non-selection this week is very different to the one that saw forward Martin Taupau leave the club in 2025.

While admitting he has spoken with Walsh about the incident, Maguire did his best to keep the specifics of that conversation in house.

“I spoke to Reece this morning and we went through it,” Maguire told the media ahead of the 2025 grand final rematch with the Storm on Thursday night at Suncorp Stadium.

“I understand there’s a like there on social media but we’ve had the conversation and he realises that things move quickly on social media … but different circumstances (compared with Taupau).”

Maguire refused to be drawn on why the circumstances were different, before declaring both he and Walsh were moving forward.

“Everyone’s got emotion around these scenarios but we’re very transparent, Reece loves Reyno, we all do but sometimes things like that unfortunately happen,” he said.

Reynolds retreats on initial comments

After initially indicating the club had made the call that he wouldn’t play again in 2026, Reynolds told the media on Tuesday afternoon it was in fact his decision to retire with immediate effect — something Maguire re-iterated.

“(Adam) basically said to me, I think it’s time Madge and I respect that,” Maguire said.

“We’d love to see him out there… but he ended up calling it a day.

“In my eyes, I was going to give him every opportunity to try and get there but it came to a point on Monday night where he said ‘I’m done’.”

Brisbane hosts Melbourne in NRL Round 26 on Thursday night in their final home game for 2026.

It will also be the final appearance of superstar Payne Haas at Suncorp Stadium as a Broncos player.
