Organisers of the Sydney Marathon say they will not reproduce this year’s finisher medals despite admitting the design features a small but somewhat embarrassing error.

When the 2026 medal design was released — with the reverse side featuring a selection of well-known Sydney landmarks — it quickly became clear that instead of showing Allianz Stadium at Moore Park, it actually featured the unmistakable silhouette of Allianz Arena in Germany, the 75,000-seat home ground of European football giants Bayern Munich.

Other landmarks correctly depicted on this year’s medals include the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and St Mary’s Cathedral.

The front of the medal features a stunning blue and white Indigenous design created by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, who had no involvement in design of the reverse face.

The 2026 Sydney Marathon takes place on Sunday 30 August with an expected 40,000 participants ranging from Olympians and World Champions to weekend warriors.

Everyone who completes the 42.2km course will take home a finishers’ medal, design flaws and all.

Favourites for the men’s event include Sisay Lemma (Ethiopia), Timothy Kiplagat (Kenya) and reigning 2025 World Champion Alphonce Simbu (Tanzania).

In the women’s event 2020 Olympic Champion Peres Jepchirchir (Kenya) is the standout with a personal best time of 2 hours 14 minutes 43 seconds — more than three minutes faster than her nearest rival.
