James Hird has revealed he is in discussions with rival AFL clubs after being ‘disappointed’ on missing out on the Essendon coaching role to Mark McVeigh.

McVeigh is reportedly presenting to Essendon’s board today, which is a sign that he is going to be imminently announced as their new coach.

Hird applauded his ‘friend’ McVeigh for getting the role but couldn’t hide his feelings about missing out on becoming Bombers coach for a second time.

“Firstly, congratulations to Mark. He’s a great friend of mine, and I’m very proud of him that he’s going to be named the coach, so good on him,” Hird said on Channel Nine.

“From a personal point of view, it’s very disappointing. I’m disappointed. I put my heart and soul into the effort but obviously fell short, and that’s the way it goes.”

When asked if he would consider working alongside McVeigh at Essendon, Hird made it clear that would be unlikely.

The Bombers legend reiterated his desire to be a senior AFL coach again and revealed he has recently had contact with other AFL clubs.

“Not with me, so I think it’s time to move on to other things,” Hird said when asked if there had been talk about him taking another role at Essendon.

“Yeah, I think so (still have the desire to coach). I’m obviously down at Port Melbourne at the moment, and we have a finals series to play.

“We’ll see what plays out at the end of the year with some other clubs who have contacted me and we’ll see what happens.”
