A Swish List podcast post invited followers to choose between the two perimeter stars. Some favored Allen’s longevity and scoring role, while others pointed to Thompson’s championships, defense and playoff production. The disagreement intensified after Thompson personally answered comments involving his former team, the Golden State Warriors.
Why Klay Thompson confronted fans over Ray Allen debate
Thompson addressed the argument that his career looked stronger mainly because he played beside Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. His reply centered on production before Durant joined Golden State and during the Warriors’ most demanding playoff run.
“You do realize I was the 2nd leading scorer on two championship teams without KD? You want me to go to a bad team and put up empty stats, that’s easy, buddy,” Thompson wrote. “Holy s-, I led the 2016 playoffs in points scored, you casuals.”
The response challenged fans to separate team context from individual value. Thompson was not claiming Allen lacked a stronger résumé. He argued that playing within an elite system did not remove his responsibility, especially when defenses planned around his shooting and movement. His 2016 postseason performance supports that point.

Golden State won 73 regular-season games before losing the 2016 Finals, while Thompson led all playoff scorers in total points. He also owns four championships, including two before Durant arrived. Allen finished 18 seasons with 10 All-Star selections and two championships. Thompson respected that résumé while rejecting the claim that their comparison was not close.
Allen carried greater scoring responsibility during important stretches with Milwaukee and Seattle. Thompson developed a different case through defense, efficiency, movement, shooting, and postseason value.
Thompson’s reaction did not settle the debate. It showed that he believes championship responsibility and playoff impact deserve equal consideration beside lead scoring, longevity, and individual awards. The exchange also explained why his supporters resist reducing his career to the benefits of playing beside elite teammates. That disagreement will keep the comparison active across different generations of NBA fans.
