Australian paceman Mitchell Starc has single-handedly banished the memories of a shock First Test loss to Bangladesh with a destructive spell to begin the Second Test in Mackay.

Just as he did a week ago in Darwin, Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss, but this time he opted to send Bangladesh in on a sunny and humid morning at Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena.

Starc took a devastating 5-5 off his first six overs and the carnage began immediately with the left arm paceman taking a wicket off the first ball of the match when he had opener Shafiul Islam caught by Cameron Green.

It was the fourth time Starc has taken a wicket with the first ball of a Test match and also means Starc has now taken 27 wickets in the first over of an innings in Test cricket — in the history of Test cricket only James Anderson has more with 29.

After a chaotic first hour the Bangladesh top order was in tatters with the tourists reeling on 5-15 at drinks, a scoreline more reminiscent of junior cricket.

Shortly after drinks Bangladesh had slumped even further to 6-21 when Pat Cummins bowled Mushfiqur Rahim for just five.
