A shock loss to the Dragons in Round 23 was bad enough. 

But Cronulla’s NRL premiership hopes have taken another hit on Saturday afternoon, and not just because of the 24-20 home loss to the Canberra Raiders.

Sharks No. 6 Braydon Trindall suffered a dislocated right shoulder scoring the opening try of the match in just the 5th minute and despite having the injury quickly put back in place the 27-year-old wasn’t fit to return. 

While scans will now determine the full extent of damage to Trindall’s shoulder — including whether he requires season-ending surgery — at a minimum he looks set to miss multiple weeks leading into the finals in a major blow to the Sharks’ chances of finishing in the all-important NRL top four.

Trindall’s absence will likely see Perth-bound Niwhai Puhru promoted into the Cronulla halves in the coming weeks alongside Nicho Hynes who will now be required to carry a massive weight of playmaking responsibility.

Red hot all July, there were always fears Craig Fitzgibbon’s men may have peaked a little too early and now with injuries starting to bite and back-to-back losses, the Dolphins have leap-frogged the Sharks into 4th on the NRL table.

Dynamic second rower Billy Burns also suffered an ankle injury against the Raiders but played on, while star centre Jesse Ramien was ruled out for the season after undergoing pectoral surgery earlier in the week and has played his last game for the Sharks before joining the Cowboys in 2027.
