A country-wide campaign has been started by the government of Bangladesh in order to create awareness about the dangers that come with internet gambling in terms of legal issues, financial problems, and social impacts. This campaign has the support of Bangladesh Bank, the Criminal Investigation Department, and bKash. This campaign is being carried out through TV ads, newspaper campaigns, and social media posts.

Public Campaign Tackles Illegal Online Gambling

The campaign takes place against the backdrop of efforts by government authorities to send the message that online gambling can no longer be carried out illegally due to the passage of the new Gambling Prevention Act 2026, which took effect from July 1. The authorities stressed that the campaign aims to both educate the public and warn illegal gamblers.

According to the campaign message, offenders may face up to 2 years in prison, fines of up to BDT100m, or about US$81,300, and arrest without a warrant. The authorities say the penalties reflect the scale of the new legal framework and the wider powers now available to investigators.

The campaign is being run on a national scale, with the aim of reaching audiences through both traditional media and digital channels. That includes television, print newspapers, and social media, all of which will be used to carry the warnings on gambling-related offenses.

New Law Replaces Old Framework

The Gaming Regulation Act 2026 superseded the old colonial statute known as the Public Gambling Act 1867. This new legislation extends the jurisdiction to activities that go beyond conventional gambling and includes online gambling, sporting activities, digital casinos, crypto-related gambling, and other related financial crimes.

According to government officials, the new act gives them additional powers to probe the gamblers who conduct their activities via websites, mobile applications, and social media platforms. The model also makes it possible for the relevant authorities to hinder access to the gambling website as well as disrupt the financial flow of the crime.

This is an important development since it enables the prosecution of gambling crimes to go beyond the traditional methods and apply to online payments and promotional activities. The campaign is intended to make those changes more visible to the public.

Wider Enforcement Powers

Officials have tied the campaign directly to the new powers granted under the Act. Under the framework, investigators can follow gambling activity across digital services and payment systems, making it easier to identify both operators and financial routes connected to the activity.

Through the involvement of Bangladesh Bank, CID, and bKash in this campaign, the elements of financial surveillance, criminal investigation, and payments become one entity in this public cautioning activity. While the warning is meant for all parties involved in the betting activities, it is especially meant for those supporting this ecosystem indirectly.

Authorities said the intent is not limited to education. It is also meant to deter behaviour by making the penalties and enforcement risks clear from the outset.

Message To Operators And Promoters

The campaign’s wider purpose is to warn those involved in illegal gambling that the legal environment has changed. Authorities said it is meant to send a clear signal to operators, promoters, and others connected to online gambling that the consequences now include prison terms, heavy fines, and arrest without a warrant.

The effort also reflects the government’s focus on online platforms as a central part of gambling-related enforcement. With the law now covering websites, apps, social media, and digital payment systems, the campaign is designed to reinforce the scope of those powers and make the public aware of the risks.
