India Tightens Esports Registration Rules Under Online Gaming Authority

India has clarified that online games offered as esports must be assessed and registered with the Online Gaming Authority of India before they can be made available under that classification. The requirement adds another layer to the country’s online gaming framework, which already distinguishes esports from online social games and has prohibited online money games.

Separate Registration Now Required

Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada set out the requirement in a written response to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha on July 29, according to Storyboard18. Under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules 2026, a service provider must apply for a determination if it intends to offer a game as an Esport.

That determination process allows the Online Gaming Authority of India to decide whether the product qualifies as an Esport, an online social game, or a prohibited online money game. The requirement means each game offered by each provider must go through its own registration process.

The rules also state that an esport must first be recognised under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, before the authority can register it. That makes the esports route distinct from other categories of online games and links the registration process to a separate sports recognition framework.

Social Games Face A Different Track

The clarification also draws a line between esports and non-real-money social games. Those games are not automatically required to go through determination or registration.

However, they can still be brought into the process if the authority directs it or if the central government includes them in a notified category. That leaves the system with some flexibility while keeping esports subject to a more formal approval path.

The structure of the rules suggests the government wants a more defined process for classifying games before they are launched or offered to users under an esports label. For providers, that means the category of each game will matter as much as the content itself.

Law And Rules Already In Force

The 2025 online gaming law received presidential assent in August last year. The accompanying rules were notified in April and took effect on May 1.

With those rules now active, the government’s latest clarification adds more detail on how the esports section of the framework will operate in practice. Rather than treating esports as a broad category, the system requires an individual assessment for every game from every provider.

That approach gives the Online Gaming Authority of India a central role in deciding how games are classified. It also means providers will need to be precise about how each title is presented if they want it to be registered as an Esport.

Registration Becomes Central To Classification

The latest clarification is significant because it confirms that esports games cannot simply be offered under that label without review. Instead, they must pass through the authority’s determination process and receive registration before they can be recognised as esports under the rules.

For social games, the path is less automatic but still tied to the authority’s powers and government notifications. The framework separates esports, social games, and prohibited money games more clearly than before, while placing the burden on providers to seek approval where required.
