Colombia Records COP 5.3 Trillion in Sports Betting Activity During the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The SuperGiros, a sports betting statistics service in Colombia, estimates that gambling wagers will take up COP 5.3 trillion during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Colombia. The firm also estimates that this wagering resulted in about COP 120 billion (COP 100 million) in tax revenues to the nation’s public healthcare system.

This was also a time of great activity for Colombia’s licensed betting industry. SuperGiros, the country’s top operators, say they saw a record amount of traffic, with football fans making a huge effort to take part in the sporting events throughout the competition.

The tournament also served to boost the betting market, with industry association Fecoljuegos estimating it facilitated around 122 million individual bets, and that the monthly turnover reached COP 5.3 trillion.

Contributions to the Healthcare System

In Colombia, the taxpayer is responsible for 15% of the real operating revenues of licensed betting operators to be allocated to the funding of the subsidised health system.

The industry’s impact was highlighted during the World Cup, in which it sent more than 15 percent of its real operating revenue to the subsidised healthcare system, according to SuperGiros: “In just two months of the World Cup season, the industry contributed more than a quarter of a trillion pesos to the subsidized healthcare system because, under Colombian regulations, gaming operators must transfer 15% of their real operating revenue to the State.”

The figures represent the increasing fiscal importance of regulated wagering in Colombia, especially when it comes to major international sporting events that have a very high level of consumer activity.

Payment Infrastructure Handles Record Activity

In addition to the number of bets placed, SuperGiros also noted a strong increase in payment processing throughout the tournament. During the hottest moments of the World Cup, the company’s SuperPay platform saw over 4.7 million transactions, totaling around COP 1.4 trillion.

Commenting on the results, SuperGiros President Edgar Páez said: “Participation during this World Cup exceeded every projection. Betting Industry Continues to Expand

A separate analysis done by Corfo indicates that Colombia’s gambling industry has grown in an unparalleled fashion in recent years. Gambling is now responsible for more than 2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) compared to less than 0.5% prior to the COVID-19 crisis, official data analysed by the organisation reveals.

Corfo also calculated that over the past few years, gambling has grown by over 80% within Colombia’s entertainment industry. In the near future, the group expects entertainment growth to be 5.8% or more in 2026, continuing the trend of being the fastest-growing of the country’s economic sectors for the sixth consecutive year.
