Bernard Tomic stuns former world no.8 in Los Cabos ATP boilover

Tennis journeyman Bernard Tomic has earned his biggest win in eight years with an extraordinary straight sets win against two-time major semi-finalist Karen Khachanov at ATP Los Cabos.

Tomic, ranked 171, steamrolled world no.26 Khachanov 6-2 6-4 to set up a meeting with Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the quarter-finals.

Khachanov has been ranked as high as eighth in the world and was a semi-finalist at US Open 2022 and Australian Open 2023.

However, in his first match since losing in the Wimbledon third round to Flavio Cobolli, Khachanov gave up two breaks in the opening set and blew a break advantage in the second set.

It was Tomic’s best win since he won his last ATP title in Chengdu in 2018, where he defeated world no.13 Fabio Fognini in the final.

Since that trophy, Tomic’s ranking declined to the point where he was ranked as low as 825 in 2022, but he has since slowly rebuilt his ranking to 171 and should earn another rise no matter the result in the Los Cabos quarter-final.

His current ranking now allows him to enter qualifying in lower tournaments and he will now have the opportunity to play more ATP events with another rankings boost.

Tomic was a Wimbledon quarter-finalist as a 19-year-old in 2011 and has four ATP titles — Sydney (2013), Colombia (2014, 2015) and Chengdu (2018).
