From Steve Kerr’s uncertain future to the possibility of landing LeBron James, anything appeared to be on the table after missing the playoffs.

Months later, the band is largely back together for Golden State. The final major piece of the puzzle fell into place on Tuesday, with Draymond Green inking a new deal to return for a 15th season with the Warriors.

Draymond Green contract details

Green has agreed to a one-year, $27.7 million deal to return to the Warriors, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports.

That’s the exact deal Green opted out of in June, aiming to give the team some flexibility with a James pursuit on their mind. Before it became clear the Warriors wanted to pursue James, Green was reportedly expected to opt into the final year of his deal.

It took an additional month to settle his contract, but the result is ultimately no different than if Green had opted in: he will play the 2026-27 season on a $27.7 million salary and become an unrestricted free agent again next summer.

Green averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game with the Warriors last season and is the NBA’s second-longest tenured player with one team behind only Curry.

Why Draymond Green is returning to Warriors

At this point in the offseason, neither side had many alternatives. Most teams are cap-strapped, which would have made signing Green difficult, and the Warriors might have been willing to lose Green if it meant adding a star but wouldn’t find any stars available to add in late July.

The Warriors know how to handle Green’s personality, and they’re the only NBA team he’s ever known. For at least one more season, the fit is ideal.

Green likely would have returned on reduced salary if James chose the Warriors. With James joining the 76ers, Green is able to take the salary he had planned to opt into before Golden State pursued James.

By sticking around for just one year, Green can still evaluate his future next offseason when the Warriors might want to make more dramatic changes.
