NFL Bans Cardinals Executive Ryan Gold Indefinitely Over Gambling Policy Breach

The NFL announced Friday that Arizona Cardinals personnel executive Ryan Gold has been suspended without a set end date after violating the league’s gambling rules.

Investigators found that Gold shared confidential draft information before the Cardinals’ 2026 selections were made public and also placed parlay bets on NFL and college games. The league did not disclose who received the information. 

“The Gambling Policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, strictly prohibits anyone in the NFL from participating in or facilitating any form of sports gambling, and from providing third parties non-public information,” the league said in its statement. “Although there is no reason to believe the integrity of any NFL game was affected, the League takes any violation of the Gambling Policy with the utmost seriousness.”

The Cardinals backed the decision, saying, “The NFL’s policies and expectations for all employees are clear, comprehensive, and consistently communicated. We fully support the league’s decision in this matter, which involves a single employee. Our focus remains on preparing for the start of training camp next week and the 2026 season.” 

Gold, now in his 13th season with the team, was promoted to director of college scouting in June 2025 after serving three years as assistant director and four years as a coordinator. 

The league emphasized that its gambling rules apply to players, club staff, and league personnel, and that more than 20,000 people have taken part in its education program. Players are allowed to bet on other sports away from team facilities, but staff are barred from all forms of sports gambling.

The NFL said the Cardinals fully cooperated with the investigation, which included interviews and a review of electronic records, and stressed that no games or plays were compromised.

Gold to appeal decision, calls accusations “blatantly false”

Gold’s attorney has pushed back against the NFL’s ruling, saying the league’s claims are unfounded and confirming that Gold will appeal.

“Ryan Gold has been an outstanding NFL executive for over a decade,” lawyer Mike Caspino told ESPN on Sunday. “The accusations made by the league regarding his participation in prohibited gambling activities are blatantly false. We have demanded an appeal, and we look forward to clearing his good name.”

Caspino disputed the NFL’s claims that Gold had shared confidential draft information before the Cardinal’s 2026 selections were small bets made by Gold’s wife with friends and that Gold himself was not involved.

He also argued Gold could not have leaked draft picks because only team owner Micheal Bidwill and general manager Monti Ossenfort knew the selections. Caspino added he does not believe the league’s case against Gold is strong.
