Gout Gout out of World Championships after injury shock: ‘No other possibility’

Teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout has suffered a serious hamstring injury while training in Brisbane and won’t race again this year.

Already set to skip the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Gout was to have raced in the Under 20 World Championships in Eugene, USA next month but those plans are now on ice.

The men’s 200m Under 20 World Record holder took to Instagram on Thursday confirming he was out for the rest of the 2026 season.

“I’m very disappointed but I have no other possibility but to accept the situation,” Gout posted.

“My focus now will be on my rehab in the coming weeks and months and ensuring I come back in 2027 better and stronger and faster.”

Gout also included medical details outlining severity of his injury which explained he had suffered a ‘partial disruption of the tendon which involves less than 10 per cent of the cross-sectional area of the tendon but extends over an 8cm length’.

Responding to the injury setback Australian Athletics posted it own message of support for the 18-year old.

“Gout has had a phenomenal couple of years, and has a long and exciting athletics career ahead of him… while this will be disappointing for Gout himself as well as his many fans, unfortunately injuries are part of the sport, and it is important that he takes the time to rehabilitate, recover and return to the track to compete when he is ready.”

Gout will still only be 19 when next year’s senior World Athletics Championships are held in Beijing in September 2027, while the Los Angeles Olympic Games will be an obvious major goal in the northern hemisphere summer of 2028.
