Survey Finds Number of Brazilian Bettors Tripled During the 2026 World Cup
A new survey conducted by Brazilian fintech Klavi has shown that 34.8% of Brazilians deposited money at betting platforms after the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, three times higher than the 11% observed in May. It clearly illustrates the influence of the tournament on gambling activities in the country.
The information was obtained from the Central Bank of Brazil’s Open Finance data, which analyzed a sample of 1.2 million individuals. It should be noted that the survey took into account only transfers to the authorized betting operators but not the wagers made at illegal platforms, which still make up almost half of all bets made in Brazil according to the estimation of Klavi.
Average Deposits Increased as Well
It turned out that not only the number of gamblers increased during the World Cup but also the average amount of deposits per bettor. Thus, on June 28, it reached BRL 272, while it was BRL 188 before the start of the tournament.
The highest average deposit was made on June 14, one day after the match between Brazil and Morocco, when the bettors deposited BRL 524 each on average. It was also found that there is a high level of concentration of gambling activities in the evenings; more than 60% of the deposits were made after 6:00 p.m., when World Cup matches were broadcast. Only 10% of the transactions happened in the morning.
The analysis showed that gambling expenses are highly concentrated. In accordance with Klavi, the 10% of bettors who made the largest number of deposits transferred 20 times more money than the other 90% of users combined.
Ministry of Finance Opens Administrative Proceedings Against Gambling Advertisements
Separately, it should be noted that Brazil’s Ministry of Finance has initiated administrative proceedings against bet365, Betnacional, and KTO due to the broadcasting of advertisements for gambling during CazéTV’s broadcasts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to Folha de S. Paulo, the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA/MF) found some violations of the law concerning advertising of gambling in connection with the broadcast of the matches of Brazil’s national team. It was mentioned that some advertisements tried to create an impression of urgency to bet and contained mandatory warnings regarding the age restrictions and risks of debts, which were written in a font size that could not be seen.
Additional Restriction on Advertising is Expected
In order to prevent possible problems, the Ministry of Finance ordered an immediate stoppage of broadcasting of the gambling advertisements on CazéTV, failing to meet the requirements of the existing legislation. It should be noted that Brazil’s National Advertising Self-Regulation Council (CONAR) suggested stopping the same advertisements.
The companies will be fined up to BRL 2 billion, along with other punishments provided by Law No. 14,790/2023, known as Brazil’s Betting Law.
It is worth mentioning that additional restrictions on gambling advertisements are expected soon.
