Heading into Thursday’s Round of 32 matchup in Los Angeles, as one of the top heavyweights still alive in the tournament, Spain will be favored to handle business against Austria — but if recent losses for Germany and Netherlands plus a scare for England proved anything, it’s that the World Cup is full of surprises.
After a surprising 0-0 tie in its opener vs. Cape Verde, Spain has bounced back, first dominating vs. Saudi Arabia, then beating Uruguay 1-0 to lead Group H. Austria, meanwhile, used a 3-1 win over Jordan and a tie with Algeria to stay alive; now, Austria is making its first knockout round World Cup appearance since 1982.

4:59 p.m. — That’s all from Inglewood. Spain advances past Austria with a fairly dominant effort, even if a 3-0 final score doesn’t completely reflect it. That marks Spain’s first knockout-round win at a World Cup since 2010.
89th minute: Oyarzabal again! Spain goes up 3-0
4:57 p.m. — If this wasn’t over before, it is now. Even with Lamine Yamal subbing out, Oyarzabal notches his second goal of the match, making it 3-0 Spain as they can begin thinking about the Round of 16.

83rd minute: Austria given a yellow card, Lamine Yamal subbed off
4:51 p.m. — Stefan Posch gets hit with a yellow card in the 83rd minute. That marks the 200th yellow card of the 2026 World Cup so far.
Shortly after, Spain star Lamine Yamal comes off the pitch, likely for precautionary reasons with Spain owning a commanding enough advantage late.
66th minute: Pedro Porro extends the Spain advantage with a header!
4:29 p.m. — Make it 2-0 Spain. After Austria’s Marcel Sabitzer missed a potential equalizer, Pedro Porro comes through for Spain with a well-executed header that finds the back of the net.
The shot-on-goal difference is now a drastic 8-0 in Spain’s favor, with La Roja on track to advance to the Round of 16 barring a collapse.

Second half underway
4:09 p.m. — The second half has begun as Austria takes possession.
Halftime: Spain up 1-0
3:52 p.m. — After four minutes were added in the first half, Spain takes its 1-0 advantage into the break. The score doesn’t fully reflect it, but its been all La Roja in this one so far; Spain has had possession 64% of the time and has six shots on goal to Austria’s zero.
Schlager deserves some credit for making some impressive saves, with five already, but things would have to change drastically for Austria to have a chance in the second half.

36th minute: Oyarzabal finally helps Spain connect to make it 1-0!
3:37 p.m. — It took some frustrating shots, but Spain finally comes through with a goal to take the lead. It’s Mikel Oyarzabal who does the honors after a nice Cucurella pass, connecting on Spain’s fourth shot of the game already.
Spain had been knocking on the door repeatedly, but now goes up 1-0.

28th minute: Spain nearly takes the lead
3:31 p.m. — For a moment, it appeared Spain claimed the first advantage with Marc Cucurella’s header finding the back of the net. But referee Glenn Nyberg waved it off.
