3 teams emerge as top LeBron James destinations after free agency opens

LeBron James is officially on the open market after an eight-year run with the Los Angeles Lakers. The split became official on Tuesday when Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss released a public farewell statement, thanking James for his tenure and specifically praising the 2020 championship he delivered «under the toughest imaginable circumstances.»

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, a growing disagreement over what it actually takes to build a true contender is why James chose to walk away rather than return to Los Angeles for a ninth season.

Right after the goodbye, teams started calling his agent. Charania reported that roughly 12 teams called Paul the moment the negotiating window opened, all pitching James on what a title run would look like in their city. Out of that pile, Charania trimmed the list down to three realistic contenders.

«When I talked to teams around the league there are 3 that jump out for LeBron,» Charania added. «The Warriors, Miami Heat, and Cavaliers.»

Golden State has the most aggressive pitch. The front office wants to build a «Big Four» by pairing James with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, while trying to trade for Washington Wizards big man Anthony Davis. Green already declined his $27.7 million player option to clear the necessary financial room.

The appeal for James is a competitive core, playing for Steve Kerr, and staying on the West Coast near his family. However, this plan depends on Washington actually trading Davis. For now, reports indicate the Wizards have no interest in moving him because they view “Davis and point guard Trae Young as pillars of their rebuild.”

Miami’s pitch is all about their new powerhouse lineup. The Heat just pulled off a massive blockbuster trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis, and they brought back Andrew Wiggins to keep their defense strong. Fitting James into the budget is actually the easy part since he’s reportedly willing to take a veteran minimum contract just to chase a ring. 

Putting the 41-year-old next to Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo would give Miami a terrifying frontcourt, and playing for Erik Spoelstra is a massive selling point on its own.

And the Cavs offer James a true homecoming. This would be his third stint with the franchise he led to that historic 2016 championship. But the biggest hurdle here is the money. They can only offer him a veteran minimum contract if they sign him directly. 

However, James isn’t rushing to sign a new contract. Per Charania, he is making a decision entirely around personal happiness and a real shot at meaningful basketball, not chasing the biggest paycheck.
