How Dustin Johnson’s quadruple-bogey bunker meltdown sent him tumbling down U.S. Open leaderboard

Through 27 holes at the U.S. Open, Dustin Johnson looked like he had turned back the clock.

On the 10-year anniversary of his 2016 U.S. Open win, Johnson at one point sat 4-under par and just one shot off Wyndham Clark’s lead with a chance to go into the weekend in one of the top pairings at Shinnecock Hills.

Instead, a meltdown capped by a quadruple bogey at the 15th hole sent Johnson tumbling below the projected cut line.

Dustin Johnson quadruple bogey at U.S. Open

After par at No. 14 snapped a streak of three consecutive bogeys — including a double bogey — for Johnson on Friday, the 15th hole devolved into a disaster for the 41-year-old.

Johnson posted an eight on the Par 4 hole, struggling with Shinnecock Hills’ bunkers after the bunkers gave him trouble earlier in the round. At one point, Johnson failed to get the ball out of the bunker with too soft of a touch and overcorrected, sending the ball sailing over the green.

Similar issues plagued Johnson at No. 11, just as he looked like he had the chance to move into the lead. Johnson sent the ball from one bunker into another, setting the stage for a double bogey that began his slide. In all, Johnson lost eight strokes in a span of just five holes.

The same problem arose at No. 15, where Johnson’s second shot went from one bunker to another.

Dustin Johnson just made a snowman at 15.

He’s 8-over his last 5 holes, and is now in danger of missing the cut.

The five-hole sequence dropped Johnson from 4-under par to 4-over par, below the projected cut line of 3-over. He was able to get one of those shots back at No. 16 and move to 3-over with a chance to survive into the weekend.

The veteran golfer was sitting pretty at 4-under par for the tournament through 28 holes before dropping eight shots in five holes and falling to 4-over par.
